Medical brigades in Copán Ruinas, Honduras: 17 years with Rotary Asheville
Every February, a free dental and eye brigade serves Copán Ruinas. The story, the numbers, and how the operation works with the Rotary Club of Asheville.
Delivery beds, neonatal incubators, and hospital equipment donated to the Santa Rita Polyclinic, with Rotary World Help and Canadian volunteers.
The Santa Rita Polyclinic Hospital, in the department of Copán, received medical equipment valued at over $350,000, coordinated by the Club Rotario de Copán Ruinas together with Rotary World Help — a Rotary organization from British Columbia, Canada, specializing in recovering and shipping hospital equipment — and Canadian volunteers.
In terms of value, it’s the largest donation that has passed through the club’s hands.
The shipment wasn’t loose supplies — it was equipment that changes what a hospital can do:
In context, those first two items carry the most weight. Santa Rita serves a wide rural population, and the difference between transferring a mother or newborn to another city versus being able to care for them right there is measured in hours of travel — precisely the hours that sometimes aren’t available.
A shipment this size is, above all, logistics. Rotary World Help receives hospital equipment retired from Canadian hospitals — in good condition, but replaced by newer models — inspects it, refurbishes it, and ships it in containers to projects with a reliable Rotary counterpart.
That’s where the club comes in: identifying the facility that needs it, coordinating with health authorities, managing the container’s reception, and making sure the equipment ends up installed and working where it was meant to go. Without that local counterpart, a container doesn’t leave the dock.
The Municipality of Santa Rita gave the club a public recognition for its contribution to the municipality’s health, and the case was published in the District 4250 magazine, Rotary en el Corazón de las Américas, in its July 2026 issue. Local television — Canal 20 Copán Ruinas and CTV Inter Noticias — covered the delivery.
That a Copán Ruinas club coordinates equipment for a hospital in another municipality shows how Rotary works: the club with the international connection does the coordinating; the benefit stays in the region.
A successful shipment opens new doors with partners: it builds on an established track record. For the club, this donation demonstrates what’s possible through sustained collaboration — and lays the groundwork for future projects.
The club’s other recent health work — the Health Center laboratory, dental and eye brigades — is brought together in this article.
